Diplomacy Board Game

    Rating: 9Reviewed By: Ryan@GOB Retail04/16/2012
Summary ReviewDiplomacy is a classic board game dating back to the 50's. It ranks among games like Chess in that there is no luck whatsoever, making it the perfect multi player game of skill. Diplomacy long ago earned the nickname the "best game to end friendships"...
Detailed ReviewMy first experience with Diplomacy came back in high school. I had one of those rather unique social studies teachers who sought out different ways to get their students interested in the topic at hand. In this case, he involved the entire class engaged in a game of diplomacy, just prior to starting his lessons on World War I. I have never seen an entire classroom so involved in, well, anything, as they were involved in that game of diplomacy.

Diplomacy is a game for 4-7 players, but my experience suggests a minimum of 5 is necessary and a full slate of 7 players is ideal. In Diplomacy each player assumes command of one of the seven European powers just prior to the start of World War I. Those being Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Russia and the Ottoman Empire.

All players start with just 3 game pieces, excepting Russia which gets 4. The game pieces are either armies or navies. Each game is "allowed" it presence on the board by owning a city territory on the game map. the object of the game is to acquire more city territories and hence get more game pieces. You gain control of a city simply by moving your piece onto it from an adjacent territory. Sounds simple? Its not.

The game board is set up so that each player sits near 2 or 3 unowned city territories at the start of play, but each of these is equally centered between you and another player. A game turn is divided into two phases, a spring and a fall phase. Players get a diplomacy period before each turn, where they may talk openly (on in private---mostly in private) with the other players to negotiate possibly alliances, agreements, etc and to possibly coordinate moves. Players then write down their movements in advance, but keep them hidden. Then all players show their moves and moves are all updated at the same time.

If two players attempt to move a single piece into an empty territory, they effectively bounce each other out and neither gets to occupy it. To capture a territory you have to have one unit move in and have additionally units "support" their move into that territory. With a limit of just one piece per territory and you beginning play with just 3 units, this very often will require cooperation with other players. That is where this game shines. In order to make gains you absolutely have to work together with some of the other players, piecing together fragile alliances. And there can be only one winner, so eventually, in Diplomacy, all Alliances must end and they invariably end with one player backstabbing another. The art of playing diplomacy is knowing what alliances to make, knowing when to break them and knowing how to anticipate when one of your allies will attempt to turn on you.

This game is a must. Just don't play it with the someone who is prone to being a sore loser...

This latest edition of the game is a bit smaller and more affordable than the editions I remember from when I was a teen. But the downside is, the game pieces are now chipboard game pieces where once they were nice wooden blocks. though with just two game piece types and 7 countries, its not like you couldn't grab some meeples from some other aossorted board games and implement your own upgrade.
