Steam Park Board Game

    Rating: 9Reviewed By: partytimeusa77701/13/2014
Summary ReviewThis is a great gateway game that has a lot of hidden depth. It comes across as a kids game, but after a few plays, you'll be searching for new ways to better your park.

You will focus on building a amusement park that will attract guests that will make dirt. Your job is to keep the park clean while still getting guests into your park.
Detailed ReviewI'll start with the only two bad things I can think of with this game. The big one is the instruction book. It is super flimsy and with only a read through and several quick rules checks, looks like its a few years old. The second negative is punching out the components. There is a LOT of punching to do with this game, and with several of the pieces, the paper separated from base it was on. We have several pieces that need to be glued back together to prevent further damage.

A minor inconvenience I can think of is the storage solution needed for this game. The box has enough space for everything to be in it and assembled, but it does leave me with a fear that the pieces could get bent of damaged.

    Now on to the good.

The rules spell everything out very well in a very ordered manor. Essentially you roll dice and save the dice you want to spend. First player with all the dice they want grabs the first player marker before anyone else can. The rest of the turn order is decided this way. After this, you determine how much dirt your park guests are making. They make A LOT of dirt. While building your park, dirt is your enemy and at the end of the game you will lose money (VP) for having dirt in your park. After you decide how much dirt there is, you spend your dice building, attracting guests, expanding or cleaning your park in turn order.

The game comes off as a super light game but after your first round, you will discover the depth that exists and you will be hit with a struggle of wether to focus on keeping your park clean or trying to build rides and attracting guests. Hitting the sweet spot between those two is the key to winning.

I'm usually not a fan of games with dice, but this game has allowed me to suspend my hatred. for them and i throughly enjoyed my plays so far and am looking forward to getting this to the table again.

Summary ReviewA medium-weight dice chucking theme park builder that seems to impress everyone. Has great 3d cardboard components that do enhance the enjoyment of the game and offers enough decisions without being overwhelming to new players.
Detailed ReviewSteam Park is a new release from Cranio Creations and Iello for early 2014. In this game you chuck dice simultaneously with the other players in a race to roll the actions that you'll need for this turn. You can roll and reroll any number of dice you want, as many times as you want to try for the perfect roll, but beware; This simultaneous dice chucking has a 'speed' element, in that you want to be the first person to lock in all of their dice and grab a ticket from the middle (Think Speed or Spoons or similar games). Grabbing the first ticket not only allows you to act first, which can often help you build what you need before another player does and it's 'sold out' but also will help you clean you park. If you are the last player to grab a ticket your park will accumulate dreaded dirt.

Once all players have completed rolling and grabbed a ticket players collect dirt based on their action dice, visitors and ticket bonus/penalty. Dirt effects end-game scoring as you need to pay to clean up your park, the payment increases exponentially and at 30+ you lose outright, this gives you something to worry about in your park. Dirt is manageable, but can get out of hand quickly if you don't pay attention to it.

Next, players take turns in ticket order using their dice actions to build rides, stands or park expansions. Other actions include attracting visitors, cleaning your park or playing bonus cards. The last phase of each round is simply collecting income based on the number of visitors you've attracted to your park. After 6 rounds the player with the most money wins.

Spatial relations and planning play a large part in building the perfect park, as like colored rides and stands must be adjacent, but if they are unique they must not be adjacent. The rides and stands are cool 3d cardboard figures that really helps to sell the spatial concepts. It really looks great once you've completed your park and grabs the attention of passerbys.

This game has low interactivity between players, other than the realtime dice rolling, speed aspect. I think this mechanic does help spice up what might otherwise feel like a solitaire game.

Overall, I'd recommend this to almost anybody. I've played this game with 7 other people and all have given it high marks. It's a good length for this style of game, wrapping up in under an hour and offers decent decisions without being overwhelming. It also greatly rewards planning, as the early decisions in park planning can come back to bite you or perfectly place what you need to in order to score big on your bonus cards. Great family game. 8/10
