Tannhauser Board Game

    Rating: 6Reviewed By: Devonwester06/03/2014
Summary ReviewAn aesthetically beautiful game with overly complicated game mechanics and a horribly written Instruction Book.

If you can get over these issues It's a rather fun game with tons of depth for seasoned players
Detailed ReviewTannhauser was an impulse buy for me. I saw a cool looking Box and a rather intriguing Diesel punk themed game. So i figured I'd give it a shot.

I'm a rather seasoned gamer, I've mastered a lot of other Fantasy Flight Games, but for some reason this one took myself and a friend about three hours to learn how to play. The instruction book is a hefty 80+ pages, And it is set up in almost a "create your own adventure" way. You are reading about how to put a character into Overwatch (basically just standing guard and shooting at the first thing it can see) but instead of saying that it's "putting into overwatch, pay 1 point (see page 70 for more about Overwatch)" then you'd flip to page 70 and you get "Overwatch: standing guard, shooting at the first thing it sees (see page 23 for shooting) (see page 40 for sightlines)"

The rulebook is a jumbled mess, but once you get through it and learn how to play the game itself is actually rather fun.

My friend and I played a couple Games of deathmatch. Sticking to the most basic rules, because going on an epic Quest to find out how to play Capture the flag would have delayed the game play or probably an hour.

anyway, the Deathmatch mode was rather fun. Both times we played we found the Reich was a bit more powerful, the mental abilities of the characters far outtrumped the straight equipment abilities of the Allies. The game could use a bit of balancing, but other than that it was still a fun game to play.

As an avid collector I'm interested in the multitude of other factions and separate maps, but I'm not sure if I can justify buying them to add onto a game where I almost feel confused the whole time I play it.

The best part of the game is the presentation, it comes with 10 very well made miniatures and couple beautiful, if a bit cluttered, maps. and tons of customization.

It's a fun game while you play it, but there are so many holes and sidetracks in the instructions that you find yourself making stuff up just so you can actually get to playing it.
