Summoner Wars Master Set

    Rating: 10Reviewed By: Captainlunchbox02/11/2013
Summary ReviewAs close to perfect as any game I've ever played so far. Definitely my current favorite game in my library. Everyone I've played it with has stuck around to play at least 1 more game. It's fast to learn, yet has a surprising amount of depth. It's tense, it's fun, deep, yet accessible, and deserves a spot on your shelf.
Detailed ReviewI don't have many card games in my library. I tend to enjoy miniatures with my board games and so it's hard for me to get interested in a game that completely lacks them. I enjoy strategic combat and so having a well-sculpted, 3 dimensional object helps to deliver the sense of immersion that cards do not. So, that said, you can imagine my surprise when Summoner Wars caught my eye. Plaid Hat Games has had some notable releases in the past few years, and this one seemed to be their most popular.
Within the watching of a few videos, I needed to look up more- so I went to PHG's website to learn more. What I found was the game was divided up by factions. Each faction has a Summoner. Each Summoner has a set of Champions and Common units under his command. All of these have rich back stories that lend to their play styles and abilities. The richness of theme in this game is astounding for a card-based game.
While it is a card game, and you do have a hand of cards, it plays more like a game of chess. Cards are laid out on the board and positioned and moved like pieces. There are attack ranges and abilities that are affected by said positioning. The rules are simple and the game is divided up into phases easily referenced on the back of the setup card. In addition to this, there are Event cards that are played that turn the tide and really change the dynamic of the current game you're playing. Each and every single faction has its own unique style of play. You will find a faction that will suit you. It will effectively become yours and that's when the game really comes to life.
This is the best board game I've played so far in my life. I have introduced it to people who aren't at all into the idea of cards, fantasy themes, board games, strategy games- it has an accessibility and mass appeal that are unparalleled in anything I've owned or played thus far.
Do yourself a favor and go out and buy this. If this is too big of an investment for you, financially or otherwise, get a starter set. Play this anyway that you can. It is amazing.
