GOB Game Guru Applications Open
Greetings Players,
GOB is happy to announce a new program heading into 2024. The GOB Retail Game Guru program. The Game Guru program is where GOB helps to qualify experienced gamers who have a passion for a particular game and by outreach and scheduling through GOB, we can connect that Game Guru with interested persons who are willing to book a sit down with the Guru to learn that game.
What is a Game Guru?
A GOB Game Guru will be any person that has moderate or above experience with a game who also has a passion for said game and is interested in teaching what they know about the game to other gamers. A Game Guru will apply to be a Guru through GOB and if accepted, be listed as a Guru any interested party could schedule a session with, to be held in the GOB game room, in which that party can be taught about the game.
Game Guru Qualifications:
1) Must have moderate to advanced knowledge about the game they are applying for.
2) Must have a passion for the game. Be able to communicate that passion to a person learning the game for the first time or seeking a greater level of understanding for a game they have a cursory level of experience with.
3) Must be able to commit to one or more potential days per week and show up timely for any Guru sessions scheduled.
4) Be able to follow the rules of conduct of the Game Guru program.
5) Be 16 years or older.
How It Works.
1) You get signed up as a Game Guru for a game.
2) As part of the application, you tell us your experience with the game and what you are willing to teach about it.
3) You provide the day or days and time you can be scheduled.
4) You list the approximate time duration for the offered instruction.
5) The number of persons the Guru session may include.
6) How much you wish to charge for a session.
7) A player or group of players that wishes to learn about the game you are a guru for schedules a guru session with you through GOB. GOB charges them at this time.
8) Scheduled Guru sessions will be scheduled at least one week ahead of time, but not later than 3 weeks.
9) You show up for your scheduled session and provide the game/play instruction offered in your Guru listing.
10) When the Guru session is completed, GOB loads 100% of the Guru session fee onto your Gamers Rewards account as a store credit.
Game Guru Rules of Conduct.
1) Game Gurus must be welcoming. Greet the scheduled customer/s politely.
2) Game Gurus must dress appropriately.
a. No t-shirts or other items with profanity.
b. No t-shirts or other apparel with overt political messages.
c. No t-shirts or other apparel with overt sexual content.
3) Avoid use of profanity or insulting terminology.
4) Game Gurus should never disparage the game they are a Guru for. The customer has come with an enthusiasm for the game. A Guru should support that enthusiasm. It is fine to show nuance of a game's strengths and weaknesses.
5) A Game Guru should stick strictly to offering the instruction/play that was offered in their Guru listing.
6) A Guru should follow all of the community standards and rules of conduct for the GOB game room.
7) A Guru should show up promptly for their scheduled session. If set up is required they should show up prior to the official start time, as necessary to complete the set up by the scheduled start time.
8) A Guru should not solicit any sales, actions or activity from the customer.
9) A Guru should not discuss alternative places to purchase product related to game or subject matter of the Guru session. Discussing community gathering points (aka, library, conventions, etc) is fine, so long as such locations are a competitive store.
10) A Guru will be expected to hand each participant a survey, which the customer will have the option to fill out and return to GOB.
Examples of things to be a Game Guru for:
Introduction to how to play Magic
Introduction to Magic deck building
How to play Warhammer 40K
How to model build Warhammer models
Introduction to model/figure painting
How to play Dungeons and Dragons
How to be a Dungeon Master
How to play Board Game X
How to Draw Comics Art
The possibilities are really endless. We've cited some basic examples at basic learning levels, but there is room for both intermediate and advanced options, just depending on the game or subject matter and if there is demand for that level of instruction.

Q&A (we'll add to this list as questions come up.)
Can you host multiple Game Guru Sessions in a week? In the same day?
Yes. Based on your application, you tell us the days and times you will be available and if you are willing to do multiple Guru sessions in a week, in a day, etc. It is really up to you. Just make sure to communicate that clearly to us.
I don't know enough about a game to be a GURU, but am looking for players. Can I sign up to use the Guru system for that purpose?
Sorry, no. The Guru system is specifically for an experienced player to be able to share their experience with customers under a structured process. But GOB holds a lot of means for you to be able to connect with potential players outside the Guru system. In store message board, Game Finder, a whole list of Facebook groups including players looking for players can be found on our Community Resources page here:

GOB also hosts Magic, Warhammer 40K, Pokemon Trade and Play days and learn to play D&D events weekly to monthly. You can find those on our event Calendar.:

I play a lot of board games and could be a GURU for multiple games. Can I do that?
Yes. On your Game Guru application, list up to 10 board games you want to offer Guru sessions for. If you wish to list more than 10, we would ask to send us a 2nd application with up to another 10. Perhaps divide them according to time, complexity, number of players, etc, so you have the option of charging different rates for different listings.
I want to be a Guru but can not commit to a schedule week to week. Can I still sign up?
Unfortunately, no. A customer needs to be able to schedule a Guru session and know with confidence their scheduled event will happen. GOB will accept GURU session bookings no less than 1 week (7 days) out. That way we can communicate to the Guru that was booked that they have a session at least 1 week in advance. That way you know if you have not heard from us about a booking 6 days out, the Guru is free to do whatever else on those days. At the same time, we will not book a Guru session more than 3 weeks out, because, well, things change. This will give you time to update your schedule for 3 weeks out and beyond so we do not book a Guru session that you ultimately can't fulfill.
How Much can I charge for my Guru Session?
That will be mostly up to you. The Minimum will be $10. That can be for any length of session. All within reason. If you ask for a thousand dollars to teach a half hour of Magic at an introductory level, that one might not get passed the application stage. But really, think about the level and complexity of the Guru session being offered, the expected duration, the number of persons allowed and what you would like to get out of it and ask for that.
How Many players can I set from my Guru session?
Any number. Minimum is obviously 1. Maximum is whatever number you can fit around a table or the maximum number you can effectively deliver the proposed Guru instruction to, whichever is the lesser. Bare in mind that GOB will charge a singular customer at the time of the Guru session booking, so if it's multiple players in their group, if they are cost sharing the Guru session fee, that is totally up to them and the members of the group.
Guru Session Fees collected by GOB are given to the Guru in store credit when the session is completed. Can I get that in cash instead?
For a myriad of reasons, we can only offer the Guru fee to the Guru in store credit. But it will be 100% of the fee collected as store credit. Some of the reasons for this we can't really expand upon here, but its best to frame this is a micro business partnership, one event at a time. We offer the Guru system, handle the bookings and then provide the game space for it to be run in. Almost like a venue. But some of that is so we can control the process for the safety and service to our customers.
Can I offer a Guru session for a really advanced level or aspect of a game/topic?
Yes, you can. Consider the potential audience and if you think there is a demand out there for the session offered, go for it. If it seems reasonable to us, we'll offer the listing.
Can I use the Guru system to run a semi-pro type of Dungeon Mastering for a regular group?
Well, maybe kind of sort of. There is nothing stopping the instruction offered to be an actual Dungeon Master/Game Master game session. Assuming a continuing game is what the customers want, you want to offer that, and that subject is breached and agreed to between you and the paying customer. It may be important to note that bookings are first come, first serve, so it's possible if the regular group doesn't book consistently 3 weeks out, that another customer could end up booking the offered time slot first.
Will space be reserved for my Guru booking.
Yes, play/event space will be reserved for your Guru session, according to the session particulars and the number of players/participants anticipated. If a customer is looking to guarantee a certain amount of space or semi-privacy, they always have the option reserving that time in the private game room, assuming it is available for that time slot. That will entirely up to the customer.
Can I offer a Guru session for a product GOB doesn't stock or sell?
Most likely, yes. If we see demand for such a thing through the Guru service, maybe we'll re-evaluate the whole not stocking and selling it. This will be evaluated case by case, but it's absolutely possible.
